Research and evidence-based practice are components which help in reaching or achieving nursing goals such as identification of excellence in the delivery of nursing services to residents and patients, promote quality in the professional setting and distribution of the best practices in services of nursing. These goals are in accordance with the Magnet Recognition program as well as the magnet model component of innovation, new knowledge, and improvements. Despite research and evidence-based practice having different functions, the relationship between the two is what determines the achievement of these goals.

The Magnet Recognition Program dictates that hospitals should have incorporated into their organizational culture an evidence-based practice. Additionally, when undertaking documentation, hospitals are required to demonstrate that nurses assess and use research that is published in every aspect of operational and clinical processes. Moreover, the nurses are required to conduct their own research projects and eventually share their results with other nurses within and outside the organization. The two requirements have the potential for overlapping notions in many nurses’ minds. Therefore, it is important to understand the distinction between research and evidence-based practice in order to avoid organization documentation failure.

Evidence-based practice focuses on quality improvement data and other types of assessment data, research discoveries, and professional views to come up with methods of improvement. The main purpose of this requirement is to make informed decisions using the best available evidence which comes from research previously done. In addition, evidence-based practice includes patients’ preferences and values as well as clinical expertise. It is common for use of evidence-based practice use to consider that at sometimes the best evidence comes from experts and leaders, although there may not be an existence of any definitive knowledge from the results of research (Melnyk, 2011). Evidence-based practice involves innovation meant to discover and translate the best evidence into clinical practice. This is done using several steps such as cultivating of a spirit of inquiry, asking burning clinical questions, collecting the best and relevant evidence, integrating the collected evidence in patient preference and clinical expertise, assessment of practice decision, and dissemination of results.

The main purpose of undertaking research is to increase knowledge through acquiring adequate information as well as to validate the existing information on a basis of a specific theory. Research includes scientific inquiry done systematically to answer specific research questions and test hypothesis by the use of rigorous and disciplined methods. Researchers need to understand the philosophy of science before they begin investigations, exploration, and discovery. In an evidence-based project, research need to follow specific steps in order for the results to be valid and reliable. The process starts with the identification of a problem (LoBiondo-Wood, 2013). The researcher recognizes the studies done on this topic and identifies the possible gaps that need to be filled. A research question is developed and the formulation of a hypothesis is done. Research and evidence-based project practices are both required in improving efficiency and effectiveness in nursing.
